A building without drainage floods. A shed without a designed steel frame is a civil shell waiting for another contractor. A water line laid without valves cannot be tested or repaired. If these packages are designed by different people and built by another, the mistakes show up at the joint between them. 01The five kinds of work

Fabrication works

Structural steel for the job: frames, trusses, bracing, built-up members, connections, and the erection that puts them on the foundations.

The steel is designed for the loads and the span, not cut from a catalogue drawing meant for another shed. Connections, base plates, and anchor bolts are set out with the foundation drawings so the frame and the civil work meet. Fabrication, welding, painting, and erection follow the structural set. General steel construction in Indian practice follows IS 800. Loads commonly follow IS 875. Where cold-formed purlins or girts are used, IS 801 is the usual reference for those members. An industrial shed that needs a steel frame takes this scope under Specialized Works, not as an assumption inside industrial construction.

Drains & sewerage works

The lines that take water away: storm drains for rain, and sewers for foul flow — open or covered drains, pipe sewers, manholes, and the connection or outfall the site is allowed.

Diameter and gradient follow the flow and the invert levels. A pipe chosen because it is in stock is not a design. Bedding, joints, and manholes are part of the same job. Storm and foul systems are kept separate unless the brief and the local body require a combined arrangement. Public sewerage practice in India commonly refers to CPHEEO guidance. Self-cleansing velocity and the outfall condition matter as much as the length of pipe in the ground.

Water supply works

The line that brings water in: connection or source, rising or gravity main, storage where it is needed, and distribution on the plot or the site.

Pipe material and class match the pressure and the ground. Isolation valves, washouts, and air valves are named in the scope so the line can be pressure-tested and maintained. Storage — underground sump or elevated tank — is sized from demand, not copied from the next plot. Site water supply and a municipal trunk main are different jobs; this page is the site and project package.

Canal structures

Civil structures on an irrigation or drainage canal: regulators, falls, escapes, outlets, and the smaller works that control or cross the channel.

The waterway, the levels, and the scour decide the structure. Wing walls, floors, and protection works belong with it. Without them, the channel cuts around the structure and the banks fail. A canal structure is not a building foundation and not a road culvert copied onto a canal drawing. It is designed for that channel and that discharge.

E&M works (electrical & mechanical)

The electrical and mechanical package that sits with the civil work: site and building power, panels, earthing, lighting, and mechanical items such as pumps and motors where they are written into the scope.

Loads are listed before conduits are cast into slabs and walls. Cable routes, panel locations, and pump bases are set out with the civil drawings, not chased into finished work. Statutory approvals for electrical work sit with the authority or the utility; drawings can be prepared so they can be submitted. E&M on this page is the project package tied to construction — not a claim to run a city network or a power plant.

Site and brief

What the specialized package is for: steel frame, drains, water, canal structure, E&M, or more than one. What already exists on site, and what has to be ready at handover.

Surveys and design inputs

Levels, existing utilities, soil where foundations or buried pipes depend on it, and for canal work the waterway and operating levels. Drawings prepared together with the civil or infrastructure set so the packages meet.

Scope and estimate

A written scope for each package: what is fabricated or laid, what is tested, and what is left to the authority, the utility, or another contractor. Price follows that scope.

Foundations, trenches, or channel works

Anchor bolts and pedestals for steel. Excavation, bedding, and chambers for pipes. For canal structures, excavation and foundation in the dry season where the channel allows. Civil work that the specialized package sits on is finished to the levels the drawings require.

Fabrication, laying, or installation

Steel fabricated and erected to the structural drawings. Pipes laid, jointed, and backfilled. Canal structure cast or built as detailed. E&M installed to the load list and the layouts.

Testing and handover

Bolt torque and alignment checks for steel where specified. Pressure or leakage tests for water and sewer lines. A dry run of pumps and panels where E&M is in scope. A walkthrough and a list of anything still open.

A job that only needs fabrication may skip buried-pipe steps. A drains-only job does not need a steel erection sequence. The order above is the usual full package; the written scope names which steps apply.

03What has to be settled before work starts

Loads and layouts: For steel: spans, crane or equipment loads if any, wind and seismic as applicable, and base-plate / anchor-bolt setting. For E&M: a load list and panel schedule. For drains and water: peak flows or demand, and the invert or pressure the line must meet.
Levels and existing services: Finished floor, road, and ground levels. Existing cables, sewers, and water lines that the trench or foundation will cross. Guessing the location of a live utility is not a method.
Materials and standards: Steel grade and section list; pipe material and class; concrete grade for chambers and canal structures; cable and panel specifications where E&M is included. Named in the scope so the site is not substituting on the day of erection or laying. Steel work commonly references IS 800; buried drainage and water practice commonly references CPHEEO guidance and the relevant IS for the pipe type.
Interfaces: Where Specialized Works meets Construction Services or Infrastructure Services: foundation bolts for a shed, drain outfalls at a road, water connection at the boundary. Each interface is owned in the scope, not left as “the other contractor will manage.”
What “finished” means: Fabrication only, supply and erect, pipes tested and backfilled, structure complete with protection works, or E&M tested and handed over. The estimate matches one of those, and says which.

05Questions before you start

What falls under Specialized Works?: Fabrication works, drains and sewerage works, water supply works, canal structures, and E&M works (electrical and mechanical). Houses, roads, culverts, and bridges are other services.
Can you fabricate steel for a shed we are building with you?: Yes. That is the usual link between Industrial Construction and Fabrication Works. The steel and the foundations are designed together so the bolts and the base plates match.
Do you only do fabrication, or also drains and water?: All five packages listed on this page. A job may take one package or more than one, written into the same or linked scopes.
Who decides pipe size for a sewer or a water line?: The flow or the demand, the levels or the pressure, and the outfall or source condition. A diameter taken from another site is not used unless it matches this one.
Are canal structures the same as culverts?: No. A culvert takes water under a road. A canal structure sits on or across an irrigation or drainage channel and is designed for that waterway and operating regime.
Does E&M include getting the electricity connection sanctioned?: Drawings and load details can be prepared for submission. Sanction and connection are issued by the utility or the electrical authority. Fees sit outside the construction cost unless the agreement says otherwise.
